Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
On the 20th of February 2021, a United Boeing 777-200, registration N772UA performing flight UA-328 from Denver,CO to Honolulu,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was in the initial climb out of Denver's runway 25 when the right hand engine's (PW4077) inlet separated associated with the failure of the engine. The crew declared Mayday reporting an engine failure. The aircraft stopped the climb at about 13000 feet, the crew requested to return to Denver after running the checklists. ATC offered any runway, they would make it happen. The aircraft returned to Denver for a safe landing on runway 26 about 23 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for a check by emergency services. Emergency services advised of an active fire within the right hand engine and extinguished the fire a few minutes later. The aircraft was subsequently towed off the runway to a remote parking stand, where passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. There were no injuries.
The engine inlet fell into the neighbourhood of Broomfield,CO, located about 16nm west of Denver near 13th and Elmwood Street, the debris also struck through the roof of an adjacent house.
Broomfield police reported that although debris impacted the neighbourhood and damaged a number of homes, there were no injuries on the ground. The debris field expands over a nautical mile.
Ground observers reported hearing the sound of an explosion like bang, smoke and saw the debris falling down. The aircraft continued flying.

To be on board a 777 with that? would be terrifying. I always wonder about that flying across the ocean at night. "Oh that could never happen" I'd think to myself. "thats silly, these planes fly all over Houston Honolulu Chicago Denver LosAngeles Honolulu Guam" I'd further reassure myself, that theres nothing to be concerned about.

Kudos to super cool pilots and ATC for an Text book kind of handling of this emergency situation. Such situation should be included in various curriculum that teach disaster management. I totally agree that we need two pilots in the cockpit. Just one comment about the crew's decision to turn left: This was the single-engine procedure the crew briefed before departure. And that's why the pilot could answer ATC so quickly. If engine #1 had failed, they still would have turned to the left. - It doesn't matter which way you turn, as long as you fly at a safe speed. In this kind of situations, when there is emergency, hospitals around the airfield are notified and then they answer how many people they can accept. This is why the atc asks for the souls on board. Great video by the way

Handled very well. I do cringe at US pilots radio phraseology though. It would never pass in Europe. I do honestly think the FAA should be much stricter with ATC phraseology. The FaA/ NTSB classed this an a CONTAINED engine failure 🤦‍♂️🧐🧐🧐

Hello Joe, great video and analysis. Just to comment that while 1&1/2 Fan Blades had separated, we can not be sure it was an UNCONTAINED engine event. This term would only be applicable when there is proof that the Blades left the engine via the inlet. If not, it would be a CONTAINED engine failure. Also the engine blade off test shown at 3:50 did not suffer an uncontained failure.

“Single pilot cockpit on passenger and cargo planes”! Has that even been proposed? If so, I’m shocked, because it goes against the redundent systems philosophy in aviation. I’m no pilot, but have hundreds of thousands of miles as a business passenger. I am a critical care nurse and have volunteered and participated in several over water medical emergencies aboard flights. During these events I was required to communicate complex information in person to the Captain whilst I was attending to my patient (once I actually had three simultaneous, separate patients on a single overwater flight) so he could make critical decisions with regards to his flight plan; eg. “ Do we need to set it down in Greenland, shoot for Heathrow or continue on to Frankfurt?” How could this happen successfully with a single pilot cockpit? The Captain was required to leave the cockpit under another pilots control whilst I reported my findings to the Captain and assisted him with running potential scenarios by providing him with information to permit him to make critical benefit/risk assessments. I simply can’t imagine any scenario that would cause me to entertain the idea of a ”single pilot cockpit” on ANY flight where the wheels are off the tarmac. Please tell me this is not even a consideration in the aviation world?

Thank you for the insight of what happened. Incidents like this is where training by the pilots, crew members and ATC pays off in spades. Kudos to everyone who made a safe landing possible. People can bash United or any other airlines they want but it is the constant training that pilots and others go through when the sh*t hits that fan that counts. I have a friend's husband who is a United pilot and he was also an instructor. Professionals at what they do.

Just curious, why didn't the pilot opt to do a 180 and return directly to the runway from which they took off? I understand that the plane can still fly on one engine and the pilot said he wanted time to "run some checklists" but considering the fact that there was an engine fire and they did not know how bad it was, wouldn't it be the best idea to get the plane back on the ground as early as possible anyway?

Very good explanation. I've actually flown that exact aircraft and I can tell you that we practice these events all the time in the simulator.. The plane flies well on one engine, and the crew did an amazing job!
